Recovering Industrial Waste Heat: Real-World Strategies for Steam Recovery and Energy Savings

Industrial facilities often have untapped opportunities to recover waste heat and improve efficiency. This session provides a practical framework for identifying waste heat sources, evaluating heat pump-based recovery options, and assessing the role of process integration in project success. Real-world examples, including waste heat-to-steam applications, will highlight proven approaches and lessons learned. Attendees will leave with a better understanding of how to estimate savings and recognize opportunities worth further analysis.

Improving the Performance of Industrial Process Cooling

Annelise Tucker, Energy Engineer, Kinergetics LLC

Industrial process cooling systems can be significant energy users, but they also offer strong opportunities for improved performance and cost savings. This session will help participants identify the major components of chilled water systems, understand best practices for efficient operation, and recognize practical energy-saving opportunities across industrial cooling applications. Attendees will also learn how to estimate potential savings relative to baseline system performance, helping them better evaluate opportunities for optimization.

When you arrive at Lambeau Field, please park in Lot 4 off Lombardi Avenue and enter through the American Family Insurance Gate. When inside, please take the escalators to Level 4. There will be signage posted at the top of the escalators directing you to your event space. For guests who require additional assistance, please take the elevators to Level 2 and a Guest Services Representative will assist you with access to Level 4.

Greg Smedema
Manager of Key Accounts
WPS

Greg Smedema was named Manager – Key Accounts for WEC Energy Group in August 2022. In this role, Smedema is responsible for the 350 largest We Energies and Wisconsin Public Service industrial and commercial customers, managing a team of 10 account managers with the assistance of two business analysts.

Smedema started his WEC Energy Group career with We Energies in 2011 as an Agricultural Account Manager. In that role, he was the primary contact for agricultural customers’ needs ranging from billing and services to stray voltage. Prior to this role, he worked as an Energy Efficiency Advisor contracted to We Energies through Franklin Energy since 2007. In August 2018, he became Operations Supervisor – Major Projects, Natural Gas, supporting seasonal gas inspectors and contract crews installing projects in the Fox Valley area. 2020 saw Smedema return to account management as a Principal Account Manager in the We Energies Key Account Group.

Smedema holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agri-business with an emphasis in Agricultural Engineering Technology from UW-Platteville. He has served on a number of non-profit, promotion and economic development boards, as well as completing the Leadership Fox Cities Program.

Dave Nyquist

Dave Nyquist has worked with Focus on Energy since 2012 and has been in the energy efficiency industry for 20 years. He is currently the Outreach Manager and oversees a team of advisors that work closely with trade allies. Nyquist is also a Certified Energy Manager. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren at their family cabin in the UP and traveling to National Parks.

Tom Tucker
Principal and Founder
Kinergetics

Tom Tucker is the Principal and Founder of Kinergetics LLC, a Madison based engineering company focused on supporting industrial facilities around the world reduce energy costs and their environmental footprint through energy efficiency, de-carbonization, and beneficial electrification. His experience ranges from “potential studies”, investment grade energy assessments, and process de-bottlenecking, to detailed engineering, design, and commissioning of process heat recovery systems.

Tom and his team at Kinergetics provided the design that won the Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce “Environmental Innovation Award” in 2012 for process ventilation heat recovery and were awarded “Electrical Energy Efficiency Program Ally of the Year” for 2015/2016 by Ameren Illinois. In 2022, Tom was awarded a patent for a method to improve ethanol energy efficiency. A number of his heat reclaim designs are unique in the industry, including a Patent for application of direct contact evaporation waste heat integrated vapor recompression systems to convert low grade waste heat to steam.

Tucker is a registered Professional Engineer, Qualified Steam Specialist and certified Fan Systems Expert for the United States Department of Energy (DOE). He has more than 30 years of experience supporting industry by providing detailing energy efficiency, process engineering, project implementation and construction oversight in the food/dairy, pulp and paper, ethanol, plastics and metals industries. He holds a bachelor’s degree in physics from the College of Charleston, and a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Annelise Tucker is an Energy and Business Development Engineer at Kinergetics, LLC. Tucker has a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She provides support to Kinergetics with detailed energy investigations for power and thermal energy use reductions, unit operation evaluation and supports eMat™, Kinergetics wireless data acquisition system. Kinergetics has extensive experience with process cooling, refrigeration, and cooling towers, including field testing, design and verification of operating performance in four countries.
