3.2 Smart Building Operations through Optimal Control and Energy Performance Monitoring

This is course 3.2 of the Energy Modeling, Intelligent Building Operation, and Advanced Energy Performance module.

A smart building is any structure that uses automated processes to automatically control the building’s operations, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, security, and other systems. This session aims to introduce the concept of smart buildings from two perspectives: fundamental principles and practical applications and solutions. The fundamental principles part includes a discussion on what the smart building is and how it works to achieve smart control and optimal energy efficiency. The practical applications and solutions parts are centered on introducing the popular strategies widely used to make a building smart and energy-efficient, e.g., model predictive control, occupancy-based control, and grid-interactive efficient building. Multiple state-of-the-art case studies are elaborated to demonstrate the power of smart buildings for reducing building energy consumption, maintaining occupant’s well-being, and achieving a carbon-neutral economy.
