1.3 Building Control System Design

This is course 1.3 of the Fundamentals of Building Control Systems module.

This presentation starts with the general building control system design process and roles and responsibilities of mechanical engineer and controls engineer. Unified Facility Criteria (UFC) and Unified Facility Guide Specifications (UFGS) related to direct digital control (DDC) system design (UFC 3-410-02, UFC 3-470-01, UFGS 23-09-00, UFGS 23-09-13, UFGS 23-09-23, UFGS 23-09-93) are then introduced and illustrated with some examples. Steps in a building control system design process are discussed in detail in several sections: Understand the Mechanical System, Control Schematic Diagram and Points Schedule, Control System Layout, Network Design, Schedules and Bill of Materials, and Control Sequence Programming. Examples of building control schematics, components, points schedules, network diagram, layout, wiring diagram, bill of materials, and controls programming are given throughout the discussion.
